Even the so-called SBD quality bit in the middle suffers from a too-high-in-the-mix vocal, and Pig's harp will bring every dog in the neighborhood around. Good performance, a bit on the sloppy side. I'm going to cherrypick this down to one CD. Love the early arrangements of Dire Wolf, Black Peter, and especially UJB, but 3 stars for me. Crappy mix hurts my ears! jlucas611 2005-03-11 01:11:31 2005-03-11 01:11:31 3 true, the aud recordings in the beginning are rough, although casey jones sounds pretty good. i'm so happy about this big boy pete...i've always loved the big boy pete from 9.20.70 even though the vocals are almost inaudible...this version is maybe not as good as september's, but it's still a wonderful song. then into a very, very nice morning dew. generally i don't like hard to handle and i'm not crazy about this one either except for a groovy scat bit by pig before the jam. hate to complain about mixes, but...the guitar/organ lines between vocal phrases on TOO don't explode like they need to. you know, "...she lays on me this rooooose" WHAAAACKLAAABAAAAADEEELOOODEEELOOO...that's what needs to happen, otherwise the vocals just kind of hang there awkwardly...this seems to be problematic in many '70 TOO's...BUT, going into black peter is fantastic. cumberland blues cooks and then into a subtle, swaggering, dirty king bee that would probably make muddy proud. excellent harp playing and i didn't find it too painful as someone else mentioned...man, i have shows where the level on pig's harp is completely out of control and will make your teeth hurt. china cat>rider is so special in 1970, this one doesn't let you down at all, it's just beautiful and perfect. there are some questionable notes in the UJB harmonies, but when they hit the coda at the end all is forgotten...who am i listening to?
